Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
After The Wizard of Oz made the dog who played Toto into a star,
there was simply no stopping this breed's appeal. But the Cairn
Terrier's history dates to far beyond the 1939 classic--in fact,
Cairns first appeared during the Middle Ages in Great Britain.
Prized for their upbeat, merry, mischievous temperament, these
enchanting little dogs grow to about 28 to 31cm (11 to 12 inches)
in height and 6 to 7.5kg (14 to 16 pounds). With proper care,
healthy Cairns can live to about 14 years.
Personality
These cheerful little dogs generally have curious, outgoing
natures. Like many terriers, however, they can display an
independent streak, and may require extra patience during training.
Still, Cairn Terriers are highly intelligent animals, and extra
efforts on the part of owners are likely to pay big dividends.
While usually good with children, some Cairns may not get on well
with other animals or strangers; however, this natural wariness is
part of what makes them good watchdogs.
Grooming and Exercise
Cairns' shaggy, water-repellant double-coats require little
grooming, but they do need to be brushed and combed at least once a
week and bathed at least once a month. Owners should also check
their ears regularly and remove dirt as necessary. Cairn Terriers
need plenty of exercise, and should be taken on long walks or
allowed to play in fenced areas whenever possible. Bear in mind
though, that like any terrier, Cairns like to dig, so if you're
planning to make one a member of your family, be sure your yard
accommodates this behaviour.
