Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
Adult Chinese Crested dogs are usually 28 to 33cm (11 to 13 inches)
in height. This breed's weight can vary, but ideally it should be
less than 5.5kg (12 pounds). With love, care and regular vet
visits, most healthy Chinese Crested Dogs can live for up to 14
years.
Personality
There's no mistaking a Chinese Crested--this distinctive-looking
animal stands out in any crowd. But there's more to Chinese
Cresteds than their unusual appearance. These small dogs are
exceptionally playful, friendly and affectionate with those they
trust, and most are wonderful with children. Intelligent and easy
to train, Chinese Crested dogs generally don't bark, which makes
them ideal for apartment-dwellers. The hairless variety is also a
good choice for owners who have allergies.
Grooming & Exercise
Chinese Cresteds come in two varieties: hairless and powder puff.
Note that hairless Cresteds aren't entirely bald: they sport the
fluffy crests of fur on their heads that give the breed its name,
"socks" on their legs and furry plumes on their tails. Hairless
Cresteds don't need grooming per se, but they do need special care.
Their exposed skin can get sunburned, so owners might consider
using sunscreens formulated for dogs when appropriate as well as
special moisturizing lotions to help keep their skin soft and
smooth. Powder puff varieties should have their long, silky fur
combed on a regular basis. These small dogs generally get all the
activity they need from a daily walk plus indoor or outdoor
playtime. Note that Cresteds--especially hairless Cresteds--are
highly sensitive to cold. Keep outdoor walks to a minimum during
the winter season.
