Expectancy
Thought by some experts to be related to the Bichon family of dogs,
the Coton de Tuléar is the official dog of Madagascar. This is a
breed with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century, and
members have been the companions of royals, nobles, merchants--even
pirates! Adults generally grow to about 22 to 30cm (8.5 to 12
inches) in height and about 3.5 to 6kg (8 to 13 pounds). This is a
relatively healthy breed, and most live to about 14 to 18
years.
Personality
These bright, spirited little dogs make a fine family addition and
good watchdogs, although some can appear shy or cautious at times.
Devoted, loving and eager to please, Cotons can display separation
anxiety when owners are absent for long periods of time. Cotons can
also be very expressive, grunting and making a variety of other
unusual sounds while playing, exploring and romping.
Grooming & Exercise
The soft, cottony coat of the Coton de Tuléar should be brushed
every day. Owners should also trim these dogs' ear hair as well as
the hair between their foot pads, and bathe them as needed. Because
members of this breed shed very little, they can be a good choice
for allergy sufferers. While Cotons adapt easily to just about any
environment, including apartments, they do need brisk daily walks
and the opportunity to play outside in a secure area if
possible.
