Vital Statistics, Health and Life
Expectancy
Sometimes called the Bichon Havanais or Havana Silk Dog, the
Havanese originated in Cuba sometime in the 18th century. Adults
grow to about 22 to 29cm (8.5 to 11.5 inches) in height and 3 to
6kg (7 to 13 pounds). With love and proper care, healthy Havanese
can live up to 14 years.
Personality
Most Havanese love to be fussed over and are good with children and
other animals, making them welcome additions to practically any
household. Sociable, outgoing and responsive, they are also fairly
easy to train. However, owners should be aware that these little
dogs also have little bladders, and may have to exercise extra
patience during housebreaking. As well, they don't like to be left
alone for long periods of time--an important consideration for
anyone thinking of making a Havana Silk part of the
household.
Grooming and Exercise
The soft, wispy double coat of the Havanese sheds very little, but
must be brushed regularly to keep it from matting. Many owners have
their dogs trimmed to simplify grooming. While lively and playful,
these dogs don't need excessive exercise, and are usually satisfied
by playing indoors on top of brisk daily walks.
