Vital Statistics, Health & Life Expectancy
The Lakeland Terrier first came to prominence in Great Britain in the 19th century. Originally used to hunt small mammals--in particular foxes after farmers' lambs--this dog is mainly bred for companionship now. Adult Lakelands grow to about 37cm (14.5 inches) at the withers and weigh about 7.5kg (17 pounds). With proper care, healthy Lakeland Terriers can live to about 13 to 14 years.

Personality
Lakeland Terriers can make wonderful companions. Most are alert, affectionate and cheerful. Like many terriers, however, they can display a willful streak, and males of the breed can be aggressive towards one another. As well, some Lakelands can be vocal at times. Still, this trait is part of what makes them such good watchdogs.

Grooming and Exercise
Lakeland Terriers sport double coats characterized by soft undercoats and dense curly outer coats. To keep them neat and well-groomed, Lakelands should be vigorously brushed at least three times a week and given an occasional bath so that their fur doesn't get too dry. This is an active, energetic breed that needs plenty of exercise, so plan regular long walks and, if possible, opportunities for your Lakeland to run off-lead or play outside in a secure, fenced-in area.
