Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
First bred as companions for Tibetan monks and nobles, Lhasa Apsos
date to antiquity. Adults grow to about 25 to 29cm (10 to 11.5
inches)in height and about 6 to 7kg (13 to 15 pounds). These are
delicate little dogs but, with proper care, healthy Lhasa Apsos can
live to about 12 to 14 years.
Personality
Lhasa Apsos are loyal little dogs that can sometimes display an
assertive streak. While most are playful and joyous in their
masters' presence, some can appear suspicious or wary of strangers.
However, this latter fact, coupled with the breed's reputation for
keen alertness, make them outstanding watchdogs. Note that these
dogs aren't always the best choice for families with young
children--they don't take kindly to being teased!
Grooming and Exercise
If your ancestors hailed from the mountains of Tibet, you'd be
furry too! Expect to spend at least one hour twice a week grooming
your Lhasa Apso to ensure its gloriously thick coat is kept neat
and clean. It will need to be well brushed out and, since its long
coat can reach the ground, occasionally bathed and given
appropriate dog coat care products as needed. The Lhasa Apso is an
active breed, and these playful little dogs do need daily walks as
well as a moderate amount of indoor or outdoor exercise.
