Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
Despite their name, American Eskimo Dogs actually originated in
Germany and are members of the Spitz family. Adult Toys usually
measure 23 to 30.5cm (9 to 12 inches) in height and weigh 2.5 to
4.5kg (6 to 10 pounds), while the Miniature version usually grows
to about 30.5 to 38cm (12 to 15 inches) in height and 4.5 to 9kg
(10 to 20 pounds). Generally a healthy breed, a well-cared-for
American Eskimo can live to about 10 to 15 years.
Personality
Sweet-natured, loving and usually good with children, American
Eskimos can make delightful family pets. However, these little dogs
can be a bit wary of strangers, and can even be willful and
stubborn at times. Some American Eskimos can be somewhat vocal, but
this trait is part of what makes most of them excellent watchdogs.
They are also relatively easy to train, and most love to perform
tricks. In fact, many American Eskimos were members of traveling
circuses during the early part of the 20th century, dazzling
audiences by walking on tightropes!
Grooming & Exercise
The thick double coats of American Eskimos should be brushed every
day during shedding seasons and about twice a week at other times
of the year. Eskies, as they're sometimes known, are very clean
dogs that like to groom themselves. Because of this, and because
their skin is drier than that of many other breeds, they should
only be bathed as required. Moderately active, these little dogs
need regular walks as well as the opportunity to frolic outdoors in
a secure area if possible.
