Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
These spirited little dogs first appeared in Germany in the 18th
century. Min Pins, as they're sometimes known, grow to about 28 to
29cm (11 to 11.5 inches) at the withers and about 4 to 4.5kg (9 to
10 pounds). Healthy Miniature Pinschers, with love and proper care,
usually live to about 13 to 14 years.
Personality
Min Pins are confident, self-possessed--and sometimes
vocal--little dogs, and most make excellent watchdogs. Known to be
courageous and devoted to their families, they're generally
well-behaved around children if acclimatized to them at an early
age. While generally cheerful and adaptable to just about any
environment, Miniature Pinschers don't like being overly fussed
over, and need to have their "personal space" respected. This
characteristic means that owners may have to exercise extra
patience during training.
Grooming & Exercise
The short, smooth, lustrous coats of Min Pins don't require
excessive grooming, but they should be brushed and rubbed with a
damp cloth a few times a week. Additionally, owners should check
Min Pins' nails and ears at least once a week and groom these areas
as needed. As you might expect, Miniature Pinschers are energetic
little dogs, and require brisk walks and, if possible, the chance
to run around in a secure outdoor area every day. Most don't take
well to cold temperatures, and may require coats or boots during
winter months.
