Vital Statistics, Health & Life
Expectancy
Originating in Europe in the 1600s, Papillons are also known as
Continental Toy Spaniels. These delightful little dogs can grow
about 20 to 28cm (8 to 11 inches) in height, and weigh about 3.5 to
4.5kg (8 to 10 pounds). With love, proper care and regular visits
to the vet, most healthy Papillons can be expected to live
approximately 13 to 15 years.
Personality
Lively and playful, Papillons love attention and are usually good
with older children and non-canine pets. Some members of this breed
can be vocal--something to consider if you live in a building where
noise is an issue. Still, it's this characteristic that makes most
of them fine watchdogs. While some can become exceptionally
attached to their owners, proper training can instill the
importance of "sharing" to these intelligent animals. It may also
take longer to housetrain Papillons than it does other breeds, but
most owners can resolve this with a little extra effort and
patience.
Grooming & Exercise
Papillons' distinctive white facial blazes contrasted with coloured
patches and large ears give the precious little dogs their
distinctive look and name--"papillon" is French for "butterfly."
Their long, fine fur should be lightly brushed twice a week, while
a few baths a month will help keep their coats clean and silky.
While happy to frolic in a yard, Papillons generally get all the
exercise they need from indoor play. This makes the breed
especially well suited for apartment-dwellers.
