Vital Statistics, Health & Life Expectancy
Originating in Belgium in the 1500s where they were used to guard barges, Schipperkes are alert, energetic dogs that generally get on well with young children. Adults of the breed typically grow to about 25 to 33cm (10 to 13 inches) in height and weigh about 5.5 to 8kg (12 to 18 pounds). With proper care, a healthy Schipperke can live to about 12 to 13 years.

Personality
These alert, curious little dogs make wonderful pets. Most are very protective of family members--especially children--and usually get on well with other pets, even cats. Their innate bravery, coupled with a tendency to be wary of strangers, make them excellent watchdogs. While some can display an independent streak, patient training is usually all that's needed to teach them good household habits.

Grooming & Exercise
Schipperkes' sport short, dense undercoats and slightly harsh outer coats--fur that's easy to keep neat and only needs a quick brushing twice a week. These distinctive-looking, tailless dogs are active and energetic, and should be taken for brisk walks every day.
