Expectancy
Originating in the Shetland Islands off Scotland, Shetland
Sheepdogs, or Shelties as they're sometimes known, resemble but are
distinct from Miniature Collies. Adults grow to about 33 to 40.5cm
(13 to 16 inches) in height and between 4.5 to 13.5kg (10 to 30
pounds). With love and proper care, most healthy Shelties live to
about 10 to 15 years.
Personality
Many experts claim that the Shetland Sheepdog is one of the most
intelligent breeds in the world. Most are highly loyal, easy to
train and willing to please, although some can be a bit shy or
skittish around strangers. While Shelties usually make loving,
affectionate companions, they must be properly socialized around
small children. Owners should also teach children not to tease or
provoke these small dogs. They can be vocal but, at the same time,
they make excellent watchdogs and are quick to alert owners when
visitors arrive. Natural-born herders, Shetland Sheepdogs also have
a tendency to try to chase or "round up" small animals and even
humans.
Grooming & Exercise
Shelties have thick double coats that consist of long,
water-repellent guard hairs and short, dense undercoats. These are
relatively clean dogs and, in most cases, they only need to be
brushed once or twice a week, although they must be brushed more
frequently during shedding seasons. Owners should also trim
Shelties' toenails and the hair between their foot pads as
required. These agile and playful little dogs love to run, so
owners should ensure they can provide a secure outdoor space where
their Sheltie can let off steam.
