Expectancy
This adorable little dog originated in Australia in the late
19th/early 20th century and (naturally enough) is sometimes known
as the Australian Silky Terrier. Most grow to about 23 to 25cm (9
to 10 inches) in height and about 3.5 to 4.5kg (8 to 10 pounds).
With proper care, healthy Silkies can live to about 14 years.
Personality
Silkies are lively, cheerful, loyal little dogs. Curious and
responsive, these are intelligent animals that are reasonably easy
to train with love and patience. Some can be territorial and wary
around strangers. These traits, however, also make them good
watchdogs, and most make beloved family pets. That said, they often
attach to one person and don't like to be teased, and so must be
properly socialized in families that have small children or other
animals.
Grooming & Exercise
Aptly named, Silkies are prized for their long, lustrous coats.
Most owners secure the hair on their dogs' crowns in topknots so
that they can see more easily. Owners must also thoroughly comb
Silkies' fine, glossy fur on a daily basis to keep it from tangling
and shampoo it once a week. Silkies are remarkably active for their
size, and can often entertain themselves by romping around indoors.
This makes Silkies a good choice for apartment-dwellers, although
they still need daily walks and the chance to run outdoors in a
secure area if possible.
