Expectancy
The Wire Fox Terrier originated in Great Britain during the 19th
century. First used to eliminate small vermin--particularly
foxes--they're now exclusively bred as companion dogs. Most grow to
about 39cm (15.5 inches) at the withers and weigh about 8kg (18
pounds). With proper care, a healthy Wire Fox Terrier should live
to about 13 to 14 years.
Personality
Peppy and playful, Wire Fox Terriers generally get on well with
children. This lively little dog tends to be sociable, since it
likes being part of a pack. However, like many terriers, it also
has a mind of its own, and owners may have to exercise a fair bit
of patience during training. This is a true terrier--one that likes
to dig and even chase or hunt other animals if given the chance. It
can also be vocal, but this trait, coupled with an alert nature,
makes the Wire Fox Terrier a good choice for a watchdog.
Grooming & Exercise
The hard coats of Wire Fox Terriers require regular brushing with
a natural-bristled brush or comb, or with so-called "hound gloves."
This breed is lively and energetic, and needs plenty of
opportunities to go for walks, play catch and take part in other
vigorous activities-which is important to consider if you're
planning to make one a member of your family.
